Game Changing Strategies in Digital Printing
I interviewed Harold Percy, co-founder of Corporate Document Solutions. He talked about CDS, his personal challenges, and how he strives for the best game strategies in both business and life.
IT’S ABOUT KNOWING THE GAME
The same approach holds true for digital print strategies. Understanding the project scope—parameters, budget, execution and deadlines—are all crucial. Seeing options that can shave time and dollars, and drive the job to completion, takes mastery. Harold brings this to your project. Harold sees the combinations necessary to move your project through the printing process. From critical pre-press flight checks,to cutting-edge graphic design
services. From the right materials, to the best equipment. From smart binding and finishing options, to on-time delivery. All this, with nary a fumble. Champion quality with smooth moves and a great finish—that’s what you’ll get with Corporate Document Solutions.
Game for Life: Tackling the Challenges and Playing to Win
As a feisty kid, Harold told his parents he would have his own company someday. An athlete in high school, he was competitive and driven. Growing up in a rural farming community offered young men two options after graduation:
the service or college. Influenced by four brothers, and his father, a decorated Vietnam veteran, Harold went into
the military, and became an Army sergeant in Operations and Intelligence, stationed in Ansbach, Germany. After
active duty, he went to college. Elected student government president, saving the school newspaper was his first task. “It was my initiation into printing. I found I loved trouble shooting. I’ve always known there were better ways of doing things.”
After graduating with honors, Harold married Mary, his college sweetheart. Harold made a sideways move into
industry, where he worked in newspaper circulation, then in printing at an envelope company in Chicago.
Wanting to move closer to the church his family wished to attend, Harold visited Cincinnati to research printing
companies. At first sight, he fell in love with the city. Harold immediately landed a job with a four-color printer in town,
and the family moved.
A larger traditional printing company recruited Harold. His embraced the current technology and within six months
became a leader in sales. However, regime change closed the copy division, leaving Harold the last man standing.
His new boss wanted him to sell four-color big press, but Harold was already focused on selling high volume copying services his customers needed—technical, training, and operatingmanuals—produced digitally. After careful discussion and research with Mary, he called the play. They were excited to start a company and begin a new chapter in their lives.
“It was the right time and the right technology,” says Harold, “not genius. Timing and luck. We made a strategic
move based on what we knew.”
They started Tri-State Copy in a rented 400 square foot office downtown. Harold often worked long hours, selling
during the day, and running jobs at night. Twice they outgrew their space, and in 1996 Harold and Mary created a 15,000 sf custom-built workplace in Forest Park, and changed the name of their company to Corporate Document
Solutions, a name that better described what they offered their customers.
Game for Life
Harold has had much success. He’s also had setbacks, which he’s learned from. Each has offered a life changing
experience. Harold suffered a major stroke at age forty, which profoundly affected his mobility and speech. It took six months to recover. Harold no longer takes for granted his physical strength and coordination, and no longer takes for granted what’s important in life. Harold says his life experiences have defined him as a man. He’s now at the top of his game, with time on his side.
Moving the Chains
With decades of experience in digital offset and digital laser printing, Harold has the expertise to implement configurations to bypass bottlenecks on unique jobs. And like a good quarterback, he keeps everyone informed.
